Sri Vishnu-sahasra-nama – the thousand names of Lord Vishnu. According to the Mahabharata, the names were handed down to King Yudhishthira by Bhishma, the famous warrior, when Bhishma was on his deathbed at the battle of Kurukshetra. Yudhishthira asks Bhishma the following questions:
- In this universe who is the one Lord of all?
- Who is the one greatest refuge for all?
- Who is the one Divinity by praising and by worshiping whom a man attains good?
- Which according to you is that highest form of Dharma?
- What is that by uttering or reciting which any living being can attain freedom from cycle of births and deaths?
Bhishma answers by stating that mankind will be free from all sorrows by chanting the Vishnu-sahasra-nama which are the thousand names of the All-Pervading Supreme Being who is master of all the worlds, supreme over the Devas and who is non-different from Brahman.

Hayagriva teaches the Narayana-kavacha to Indra
Sri Narayana-kavacha - the Armour of Narayana
This prayer occurs in the sixth Canto of the Srimad-Bhagavatam (chapter 8). The prayer serves as a shield to protect the one who chants it from enimies, both seen and unseen.
When Parikshit Maharaj asked his teacher Shukadeva Goswami for means of protection agains enemies, Sri Shukadeva Goswami taught him the Narayana-kavacha prayer. It is said that one who chants this prayer gets sanctified and will be protected by Lord Vishnu in his various incarnations, by his various weapons and assistants.
Vishvarupa heard the Narayana-kavacha from Vishnu in His Hayagriva incarnation and described it later to Indra: "This prayer constitutes subtle knowledge transcendentally connected with Narayana. One who employs this prayer is never disturbed or put in danger by the government, by plunderers, by evil demons or by any type of disease."
(Srimad-Bhagavatam 6.8.38)
